With a degree in Biology and a diploma from the School of Contemporary Art in Luxembourg, Jwan Atto brings together the more technical subjects of mathematics, theoretical physics, epistemology and applied chemistry in a new concept, a new theory with a scientific basis that he calls Errorology, through which he studies errors and their characteristics. Strongly convinced that all areas of life are connected despite their apparent distance, he shifts his observations on errors into a more humanistic area, that of philosophy, giving rise to Errorism.  The thinking behind his theory is based on an awareness of the impossibility of clinging to absolute certainties, akin to a determinism that, however, generates immobility and a lack of openness to possibilities, because it is only by understanding the mutability of the world, of one’s own and others’ ways of being, of questioning all knowledge, thus extending the Socratic concept of doubt, that one can reach the awareness of the absolute lack of perfection, of imperturbability that, on the contrary, seems to envelop those who have not reached the knowledge of the importance of exploring error, of understanding its dynamics and the opportunities that derive from it. This type of philosophical approach translates into the artistic field in a two fold expressiveness: on the one hand, the more strictly pictorial one in which the simplicity of the base appears as a background for everything that may happen later, when the first drafting of the colour leaves room for interactions, sometimes calmer, sometimes more dynamic, which confirm the importance of the arrival of functional chaos to destabilise everything that seems to have been acquired, everything that without its arrival would flow on a calm but also static track. The other, equally important, part of Jwan Atto’s artistic production is that linked to Crypto Art, in which Minimalism intertwines with Errorism to give life to images in which everything is enlarged, the pixels normally used to define images to the maximum are instead narrated in macro dimensions aimed at reducing the main subject to a barely recognisable, hidden, basic outline because the essence of human research is that investigation into the world around us, but also into ourselves, which needs to move away from the logical mind to be able to place ourselves in a position of greater listening. Or, in other digital works, he uses letters to expound his thoughts related to Errorism, to his emphasising the importance of the guidelines of the philosophy he himself developed, which appear as inescapable messages from his own way of seeing life and also as a new way of combining various aspects of culture and knowledge. Art thus becomes the bearer of thought, at times explicit, at others more hermetic, but always protected by the NFT system, which attributes authorship to the digital work through a unique codification and thus also guarantees the authenticity and intellectual property of the phrases that make up the work itself. Let us now discuss with the artist these concepts which are essential to his way of expressing himself in a new way, both figuratively and conceptually. Jwan, you are very young and yet you have already been able to develop a scientific theory, Errorology, and a philosophical one, Errorism. Can you tell us about both and explain how they interact with each other? How different is the scientific and humanistic point of view, or how they are more connected than we think? Thank you, Mrs. Lock, for having me. First of all, it must be noted that my being a knowledge creator is only a natural consequence of a chain of events that has made my experience in life more profound, for example, my upbringing in a knowledge-rich family, in addition to many in-depth discussions with my wife, the physicist and programmer, Fardous, and many other factors that prompted me to be more daring in thinking about topics that an untrained mind would avoid, to be like the racer running at full speed in the race of life but in the opposite direction! Discovering that he is alone in a place full of possibilities and does not know where to start. Therefore, my role mainly consists of highlighting these possibilities, by setting the titles and the overall structure. As for the application on the ground, it is the task of the scientists who will adopt this approach and achieve what we may not find even in our wildest imaginations. To be fair, I would like to clarify what I mean by the word Error before answering the first part of the question. My use of the word Error includes a wide range of meanings, which are usually identified by the topic and the general context, some of which are (emergence, doubt, chance, exception, contradiction, indeterminacy, chaos within the order or vice versa, defect, illogical, irregular, confusion, change, unpredictable, stimulus, loophole, noise. In general, Errorology is the science that studies errors and the process of generating them in a safe way, and searches for useful applications of these capabilities in hard and soft sciences. Errorism is the general framework that includes everything related to the use of the new logic to form a cosmic view of the world, in which the contradiction is part of the solution and not the other way around. As for the second part of the question, people often fall victim to what they know and what they do not know! The scientific aspect is characterized by the existence of strict laws that basically protect us from those we do not know, as for the humanistic side, it is characterized by full acceptance and understanding of the human psyche in all its aspects, with the aim of protecting us primarily from what we know. One of the knowledge’s danger is that it forces us to do certain actions compulsively, as if we are hypnotized, which might not be necessarily in our interest. Like leading us to activate the self-destruct system, assuming that there is no good or bad knowledge. In this point, the scientific perspective shares with the humanistic, where effectiveness in achieving balance and harmony is the criterion of truth instead of dichotomous thinking. Why do you believe that error is the basis of knowledge and evolution? And why must certainties necessarily be constantly questioned? Because I have not found anything simpler and more spontaneous than Error that can explain the emergence of existence from nothingness, and at the same time be the mechanism by which it prunes the tree of its infinite possibilities through a process we call it nowadays Evolution, and this saying applies to knowledge as well, which is a process of synchronization between a group of errors. As for doubt, humanity advances primarily by doubt and not by certainty, so my motto in life is I don’t know, therefore, I am and I do not allow any idea to possess me We are the descendants of the skeptics, and this is the reason why Errorism is interested in studying ignorance much more than knowledge, as it sees ignorance as a fundamental value that is directly proportional to the increase in knowledge. Here, we mainly define two types of ignorance, the first is absolute ignorance and there is no room to explain it here. The second is known ignorance, which we find abundantly among the intellectuals, in my opinion, the intellectual is the one who asks good questions out of his great ignorance! But doubt is a stressful and obstructive condition for untrained minds. Therefore, in the past, humans used to organize themselves by setting sacred laws, and programs by priests, kings, clergymen, politicians, in order to avoid chaos and create a superstructure by which it is easier to control the masses for the sake of the public interest, but this solution is no longer feasible, and all humans must eat the apple of doubt, and know that certainty is only a break between two doubts, and thus obtaining a society that has sustainable morals stemming from understanding and not from indoctrination. The reason for the failure of the old solutions is the increase of complexity and speed, with the great interconnection that our world is witnessing, which leads to an increase in the possibilities of catastrophic errors with the difficulty of knowing these errors and locating them in the right time. Your art is linked to Abstract Expressionism, at least as an external manifestation, but the creative intent is different. Can you tell us how your work relates to Errorism and how important ambiguity is within the canvas? In fact, it is not possible to put a specific definition of my artistic movement Errorism, because it includes all the artistic movements that were before Errorism and that will come after it. Considering that every artistic movement is an attempt to shed light on one or some errors (colors, shapes, emotions, imaginations, light, concepts), in depth. As for my artistic movement, it is the spirit of this becoming, and all the transformations that the art world is witnessing is part of my artistic movement. Therefore, I create as many artworks as I like without being bound by a clear logical link between them, and this stems from the way I see myself, for example, I do not define myself, to not lose my possibilities. Perhaps this is the reason why some people like to call me Errorman. But in general, I try to find harmony between chaos and order in my artworks, in a way that I give these artworks an infinite number of meanings to be the seeds for generating errors, especially since I do not only draw for humans but for robots as well, and more specifically to develop artificial intelligence, as in developmental robotics, for example. Here comes the role of ambiguity that causes confusion, which I define as an error in perception, as confusion opens the way for inspiration, and stimulates the imagination to move in new paths in the tree of possibilities, that may come to us with creative ideas through any person or robot, who respects his intellectual errors and does not ignore them. I call this process Mining errors. Can Crypto Art be the future or will it be destined to give way to the more physical art that has basically survived the passage of centuries? Do you think one should exclude the other or can they coexist? The world after Blockchain technology is ready for a new revolution that changes our civilization, which will not be less important than the emergence of the Internet in the last century. It is difficult to predict the future of this technology with so many variables, but what is clear is that creativity and art will take up more space among people’s interests, and these technological developments are important for all types of art in general, but the biggest beneficiary is the Crypto art, and I think that in a few years, Crypto art will capture the largest part of the art market. Generally, we should focus on everything related to intellectual rights, because I think creativity will be the currency of the future. What are your next projects? There are several projects I have been working on recently, but perhaps the most important of them is Serendipity, which is a joint project with the artist Gery Oth, who is the owner of the idea, the project is unique, we will most likely participate with our project in Esch2022, European Capital of Culture event. The idea revolves around the importance of language in our lives. Since the dawn of history, man has been trying to develop the means and tools of communication, to understand the world and the others, and among the most important of these tools is the language, which is the most prominent feature of our civilization. However, language is still the main cause of misunderstanding among humans, which is one of the main reasons for the emergence of endless conflicts. Although man is a complex being, but his needs are simple much more than we think. A large part of our suffering as human beings stems from a structural defect, which is the failure of language to perform its role sufficiently to achieve optimal communication between humans. In addition, our lack of awareness of this, exacerbates the problem, because we take language more seriously than it should be, in a way that does not allow us to understand ourselves and others outside the realm of words. The project consists of several columns adjacent to each other (vertical banners with photographs), which move slowly by an electric motor from top to bottom, simulating the movement of water. Each column contains several words, which are parts of my philosophical quotes, the Epigrams, and these quotes are carefully selected out of 300 quotes, which I designed with great care to be immortal universal and have a great ability to motivate the imagination. I consider them as quantum quotes that accept unlimited interpretations and meanings. A distinct aspect in this project, is the possibility of errors, which is an imbalance occurs in the synchronization between the movement of the columns, which leads to the random overlapping of words that belong to different quotes, and the result is new sentences and unexpected statements! In the end, language is also a living organism that takes its first steps on the ladder of evolution, as it replicates itself from one brain to another, and develops itself according to variables and circumstances. Here comes the role of our artistic project, in shedding light on this deficiency and the defect in conveying the meaning found in the language, and at the same time opening a window on the infinite possibilities that is hidden between the words of the language.
