Mateo Relox

Le sue origini filippine con radici Mangyan, popolo residente principalmente nell’isola di Mindoro, lo legano fortemente al suo paese natale, malgrado viva ormai da anni a Los Angeles, al punto di sentire la necessità interiore di raccontare immagini e atmosfere di quella terra, scorci di memoria dai quali non può e non vuole distaccarsi. Le sue opere sono un modo per raccontare un mondo sconosciuto, quello in cui Matt M. Relox è cresciuto e che è incredibilmente lontano dalla vita e dalla società occidentali, un microcosmo fatto di tradizioni, di semplicità, di serenità derivante esattamente da quell’essere estranei alle dinamiche consumistiche che spesso dimenticano di osservare e aiutare le persone; nella società Mangyan gli usi e i costumi del passato non sono accantonati e relegati alla memoria degli anziani bensì entrano a far parte del vivere attuale, quasi come se il tempo in quell’angolo di mondo fosse rimasto sospeso, come se si fosse fermato. L’ultima produzione dell’artista si sposta verso il disegno con uno stile meno legato all’Impressionismo che contraddistingue la sua pittura e tendendo verso il Realismo con cui, attraverso il tratto definito ma al contempo morbido del disegno, coglie dettagli ed espressioni spontanee, particolari definiti di ciascun elemento dell’opera essenziali a regalare all’osservatore un’idea precisa e specifica di quanto l’innocenza e l’immediatezza appartengano a quella società apparentemente semplice e tuttavia strutturata secondo regole di vita morali, fatte di condivisione, di rispetto, di orgoglio verso il proprio lavoro malgrado da uno sguardo occidentale possa essere catalogato come modesto, umile. La caratteristica delle sue opere grafiche riconduce alla tecnica del Divisionismo per la tendenza a suddividere la realtà in piccoli e sottili tratteggi in grado di dare vita all’immagine complessiva esaltandone i particolari e la definizione; certo, nel movimento del Novecento, la scomposizione in righe sottili dell’immagine era realizzata attraverso il colore per esaltare la luce e la definizione del paesaggio raccontato mentre per quanto riguarda Relox l’utilizzo della divisione è funzionale al bianco e nero, al tratto sottile che esalta il particolare e gestisce l’interezza dell’ambiente descritto dall’artista. è emblematica di questo suo stile perché le donne raccontate durante l’adempimento dei loro compiti quotidiani, del loro essere parte di una comunità in cui ciascuno ha il suo fondamentale ruolo, vengono particolareggiate dall’abilità grafica di Relox, così come viene esaltato l’ambiente che le circonda, la rassicurazione di un luogo familiare in cui si muovono, in cui il chiaroscuro è valorizzato dalla minuzia descrittiva dell’artista. La sua personalità fortemente creativa non riesce però a fermarsi alla pittura e al disegno bensì necessita di misurarsi anche con altre forme espressive, in virtù delle quali diviene un riferimento importante nell’ambiente culturale di Los Angeles al punto di essere insignito di importanti premi e riconoscimenti come quello ricevuto nel 2019 dal Gawad America Awards come artista dell’anno per la sua poliedricità creativa ed espressiva. È infatti anche autore di testi per canzoni e poeta, dimostrando quanto la sua natura tenda verso il desiderio di misurarsi con differenti linguaggi perché probabilmente quello figurativo, per quanto affine al suo percorso e alle sue corde interiori, sia insufficiente per manifestare tutte le sensazioni e le emozioni racchiuse dentro di sé che hanno bisogno di trovare altri canali per fuoriuscire, hanno bisogno anche della musicalità delle parole, della loro armonia ritmica per farlo sentire più completo dal punto di vista artistico. Andiamo ora ad approfondire la conoscenza dell’artista dalla sua voce.

Mateo, lei ha un forte talento creativo, quando ha scoperto la sua inclinazione verso l’arte? Sapeva già di averlo oppure il trasferimento a Los Angeles le ha dato modo di ascoltarsi e coltivare la sua indole?

Fin da bambino i miei genitori hanno notato il mio talento, anche se a dir la verità da ragazzino di talento non ne sapevo nulla. Vivevamo nella nostra fattoria e dal momento che mio padre è un contadino non c’era altra scelta per noi che sopravvivere, quindi io e i miei fratelli eravamo impegnati ad aiutare i miei genitori nella fattoria.

Non c’erano né matite né carta da usare come materiale artistico. Infatti non avevo idea di aver bisogno della carta per fare arte, quello che ho fatto è stato esprimere la mia vena artistica nel retro delle foglie di banano che è simile a un bianco polveroso su cui disegnavo usando un bastoncino appuntito. Un giorno mio padre mi ha mostra il suo modo di disegnare. Lo faceva mentre cantava e ogni parola della sua canzone aveva un significato visivo che alla fine si è materializzato con la bellissima immagine del profilo di un uomo. Crescendo ho sempre ricordato quella canzone, fino a quando non ho iniziato ad andare a scuola in prima elementare, dove ho notato che la maggior parte dei miei compagni erano bravissimi a disegnare, quindi l’ho presa come una sfida, volevo dimostrare che potevo essere bravo tanto quanto loro. Quello è stato l’inizio del mio percorso nell’arte.

Il suo stile è sicuramente figurativo ma tendente a una tecnica grafica ben precisa, quella del Divisionismo, cispiega il perché di questa scelta esecutiva?

Illustrando un libro per bambini mi sono annoiato con il semplice disegno quindi ho sentito il desiderio di fare qualcosa per mettermi alla prova e così ho pensato di iniziare a suddividere l’immagine in linee; il risultato mi ha soddisfatto totalmente quindi ho deciso che quello sarebbe stato il mio modo personale di fare arte, sia nei dipinti che nel disegno a penna e inchiostro su carta. Dico spesso che dipingo con un milione di tratti di sincerità perché penso che nessuno possa esprimere la complessità dell’arte senza sincerità ed emozione.

Quanto sono importanti le sue origini Mangyan per stimolare la sua creatività? Il suo voler raccontare scene quotidiane del suo popolo è un’esigenza emotiva oppure un desiderio di far conoscere al mondo le tradizioni di una stirpe così poco nota?

La tribù Mangyan di Mindoro è stata la prima a insediarsi nell’isola. Originariamente i Mangyan vivevano lungo la riva del mare e la pesca era il loro principale sostentamento… quando sono cresciuto i Mangyan sono stati vittime di molestie da parte degli abitanti delle pianure. Ogni volta che le persone arrivavano nella loro zona lasciavano il posto e si allontanavano e per molti decenni hanno portato avanti la stessa strategia. Ora i Mangyan si sono insediati nel mezzo della foresta montana e sono una minoranza trascurata, non possono nemmeno accedere ad alcun aiuto governativo. I Mangyan sono emarginati sia dal governo che dagli abitanti delle pianure. Vivendo con loro ho provato le difficoltà della loro vita, discriminata in tutti i modi, sempre più povera. Quando sono diventato un artista ho sempre tenuto presente che le persone Mangyan potrebbero essere ignorate o peggio dimenticate, quindi ho deciso di immortalarle attraverso la più alta forma d’arte, la pittura di Matt Relox, l’artista Mangyan.

Ci racconta della sua passione per la scrittura di testi e poesie? Come riesce a conciliare la tendenza figurativa e dunque immediata, con il mondo più meditato e studiato delle parole?

Essendo un artista, di solito mi guardo intorno e osservo cosa sta succedendo, gli eventi attuali che colpiscono l’essere umano e tutta l’umanità. Ci sono molte cose di cui la gente ha bisogno di parlare ma purtroppo essendo una sola e semplice persona non c’è modo di essere ascoltati anche se si hanno idee geniali, quindi dal momento che per me è possibile per me essere ascoltato, trasformo questi messaggi in una forma d’arte, come la poesia visiva e le mie composizioni musicali.

Quali sono i suoi prossimi progetti?

I miei prossimi progetti saranno di tenere una mostra personale entro la metà dell’anno 2022, poi ho in programma un’altra mostra nel 2023 in cui associerò i dipinti sulla mia ricerca dei paesaggi della California alle opere sul popolo Mangyan.

Matt M. Relox, the eclecticism of a hopelessly artistic personality

His Filipino origins with Mangyan roots, a population who live mainly on the island of Mindoro, bind him strongly to his home country, despite the fact that he has lived in Los Angeles for years, to the point of feeling the inner need to recount images and atmospheres of that land, glimpses of memory from which he cannot and does not want to detach himself. His artworks are a way of telling the story of an unknown world, the one in which Matt M. Relox The Mangyan Artist grew up and which is incredibly far removed from Western life and society, a microcosm made up of traditions,

simplicity and serenity derived precisely from being alienated from the consumerist dynamics that often forget to observe and help people; in the Mangyan society, the customs and habits of the past are not set aside and relegated to the memory of the elderly, but become part of modern life, almost as if time had stood still in that corner of the world. The artist’s latest production shifts towards drawing, with a style that is less linked to the Impressionism that distinguishes his painting and tends towards Realism, with which he captures details and spontaneous expressions through the defined but at the same time soft stroke of the drawing, defined details of each element in the artwork that are essential to give the observer a precise and specific idea of how innocence and immediacy belong to that society that is apparently simple and yet structured according to

moral rules of life, made up of sharing, respect, pride in one’s work despite the fact that from a Western viewpoint it might be catalogued as modest, humble. The characteristic of his graphic works can be traced back to the technique of Divisionism for the tendency to divide reality into small, thin lines capable of giving life to the overall image, enhancing the details and definition; certainly, in the twentieth-century movement, the division of the image into thin lines was achieved through colour to enhance the light and definition of the landscape described, while in Relox’s case the use of division is functional to black and white, to the thin line that enhances the detail and manages the entirety of the environment described by the artist. The artwork below is emblematic of his style because the women portrayed in the fulfilment of

their daily tasks, their being part of a community in which each has his own fundamental role, are detailed by Relox’s graphic skill, just as the environment around them is enhanced, the reassurance of a familiar place in which they move, in which chiaroscuro is enhanced by the artist’s descriptive meticulousness. His highly creative personality, however, does not stop at painting and drawing, but also needs to measure itself against other forms of expression, by virtue of which he has become an important reference in the cultural environment of Los Angeles, to the point of being awarded important prizes and recognitions such as that received in 2019 from the Gawad America Awards as artist of the year for his creative and expressive versatility. In fact, he is also a songwriter and poet, demonstrating how his nature tends towards a desire to measure with different

languages because probably the figurative one, however close to his path and his inner chords, is insufficient to manifest all the feelings and emotions contained within him, they require to find other channels to escape, they also need the musicality of words, their rhythmic harmony to make him feel more complete from an artistic point of view. Now let’s get to know the artist better from his voice.

Mateo, you have a strong creative talent, when did you discover your inclination towards art? Did you already know you had it, or did moving to Los Angeles give you a chance to listen to yourself and cultivate your nature?

Since I was a child my parents noticed my talent, even if when I was a young boy I honestly didn’t know anything

about talent. We lived in our farm and since my father is a farmer there was no choice for us but to live, so me and my brothers were busy helping my parents in the farm. There were no pencil and no paper to use as art material. Infact I didn’t have any idea that I need paper to do art, what I did was expressing my artistic vein in the back side of banana leaves that has something similar to powdery white wher I usede to draw by using pointed stick. One day my father show me his scale on drawing. He drew while singing and every word of his song had a visual meaning and at the end of the song it materialized the beautiful profile picture of a man. I always remembered that song while I was growing until I started going to school in grade one. I have noticed that most of my fellow kids were exellent on drawing so I took ita s a challenge, I wanted to show that I could

be as good as they were. That was the beginning of my path into art.

Your style is definitely figurative, but tends towards a very precise graphic technique, that of Divisionism, can you explain why you made this choice?

Illustrating a children’s book I got boring with the simple drawing so feel like to do something to challenge myself and I thought to start to share the image in drawing lines; the result satisfied me totally so I decided that it would be my personal way of making art, both in paintings and also in my drawing in pen and ink on paper. I use to say that I paint with a million strokes of sincerity because I think that no one can express the complexity of art without sincerity and emotion.

How important are your Mangyan origins in stimulating your creativity? Is your desire to depict the daily scenes of your people an emotional need or is it a desire to make the traditions of a little-known be discoverd to the world?

The Mangtribes in Mindoro are the first people who lived in the Island. Mangyan people originally lived along the seashore and fishing was their main livelihood… when I grew up Mangyan were victims of harassment of the lowlanders. Every time that people came to their area they leaved the place and move away. For many decades they carried out the same strategy of the lowlanders. Now you can.locate the Mangyan in the mids forest mountainous and are a neglicted minority and they can not even access any help from the government. Mangyan are outcasted both by the goverment and by the lowlanders. Living with them I felt

the hardship of their lives, discriminated in all means, getting poorer and poorer. When I became an artist I bared it on my mind that Mangyan people may have been ignored or worse forgotten, so I decided to immortalize them trught the highest form of art, by Mat Relox The Mangyan artist’s painting.

Can you tell us about your passion for writing texts and poems? How do you reconcile the figurative and therefore immediate tendency with the more meditated and studied world of words?

Being an artist I usually look aroun me and observe what’s happening. the curren events that affect human being and all humanity. There are a lot of things that people need to speak about but unfortunately being small single person theres no way to be heard even if you have your brilliant ideas so because it’s

possibile for me to be heard, I use to put these messages into a form of art, like visual poetry and into my song compositions.

What are your next projects?

My next projects will be to hold my one man Show art exhibit by in the middle of year 2022, then I’m planning another exhibition in 2023 in wich I’ll shoe the paintings about my research of the California landscapes in combination.of my Mangyan paintings.
